How to Take Care of Yourself in a Time of Grief

It’s easy to let your health slide while you’re grieving, but this helps no one — not you, not your lost loved one, and not your family and friends who are relying on you.

So, it’s important to continue to take care of yourself and maintain your health even in a time of grief. Read on for some tips and tricks about how to do this.

Maintain Connections

As you grieve, you might tend to cut yourself off from the world, but this can actually be quite harmful. It’s important to maintain connections with your loved ones during this time.

Reach out to someone when you need to talk, and respond if someone reaches out to you. Take an afternoon in the week if you can and go out with a friend or family member. Go for a walk, or grab a bite of lunch perhaps.

Strive for Relaxation

Sometimes when you’re grieving, it can be hard to relax. You might not be sleeping well at night and may often feel that the stress is going to overwhelm you.

This is when you must strive for relaxation. You could try music therapy as one option. Put together a playlist of songs that calm you, and enjoy them for about a half-hour.

Just listen, and immerse yourself in the music. Use this to help you relax before bed as well so that you can get to sleep and stay asleep more easily.

Remain Active

On the other hand, some people find that their grief exhausts them so much that they can hardly move. If this sounds like you, your focus should be on remaining active.

Set a schedule for each day, laying out tasks you feel you can manage and a couple more that may challenge you a bit. Then work your way through your list, taking one item at a time and resting in between if you must.

Try to get out of the house for a few minutes every day as well, even if you just go for a walk your neighborhood.

Care for Your Body

In fact, walking and other types of exercise are especially important, for you need to take care of your body even when you’re grieving. Try to exercise several days per week with a combination of cardio and weight training.

Watch your eating habits, too. You might be inclined to eat a little or a lot right now, so try to strike a balance and make healthy choices.

Chase Your Dreams

Finally, the loss of a loved one can make you realize how short life really is and how important it is to chase your dreams. Perhaps you’ve been wanting to pursue your Master’s and boost your career options.

Now might be the time to return to school. There are plenty of online degree programs these days that allow you to pursue your studies while working and managing family responsibilities. Choose one that’s accredited and offers competitive tuition rates.
